It's the beginning of a new year and a time when lots of people are thinking about taking a face-to-face course or hiring a private tutor. If you're considering this, finish reading this blog post before making any final decision. It’ll open your eyes to all the fantastic benefits digital learning has to offer!

The Covid Pandemic: Transforming how we learn.

The ongoing pandemic has forced many people worldwide to change how they live, work and learn. In April 2020, schools, colleges and universities were suddenly closed and teachers and lecturers were thrust into the world of online teaching. Many teachers had little experience with technology and were not enthusiastic about remote teaching. Even worse, many did not have the skills and personality to create engaging lessons! However, as a teacher who has been teaching online for many years before the pandemic, I want to give you five fantastic reasons why you should choose online learning.

Safer for you and safer for others!

Covid still hasn't gone away. In many countries case numbers are high and restrictions are still in place. Being in a physical classroom puts you at greater risk of contracting not just Covid but also the flu, the common cold and many other infections. All of which are currently at an all-time high.

If you're learning from home, you have zero risks:

1. You don't have to worry about your teacher suddenly having to cancel classes because they are ill.

2. You won't get an alert that someone in your class has tested positive for Covid and that you have been exposed to the virus.

3. You won't have to worry about catching any other nasty illnesses from your classmates. Nobody wants to get sick!

If you choose to learn online, you will have continuity of learning and a safe learning environment.

You get all the attention you need!

One of the drawbacks of face-to-face learning is that you have to share the time and attention of the teacher. Think of your days in school and how many other students demanded attention from the teacher. How often were you able to ask a question? How often were you able to practise your speaking skills? How often were you able to contribute to class discussions? All of these are important skills when participating in class. When an online teacher gives one-to-one classes, all the attention that you need is devoted entirely to you. Also, you don't need to worry about asking a question and feeling embarrassed or afraid to make a mistake when speaking in English. Your teacher will have seen people make these mistakes before and you will not surprise them.

You optimise your learning choices!

If you try Googling face-to-face English courses in your area that are within travelling distance, you’ll quickly discover that your options will be limited. The chances are you'll find a general English course when what you're looking for is a business English course. You might find that you’re looking for an advanced-level class and all the local courses are for beginners and elementary students. However, if you start Googling online English classes, specifying what level, interests or needs you have, then you’ll find a much wider range of classes to choose from.

Customise your curriculum!

Most face-to-face courses are very inflexible as you’re forced to follow a set curriculum over a fixed time frame. The problem is that you have no control over what you learn. There’s always the chance you’ll have to repeat material or topics you already know. Frustrating isn't it?

This is where one-to-one online learning comes into its own. The tutor can work with you to design a personalised learning plan that meets your specific needs and goals. Even better, your curriculum can be adapted at any time throughout your studies as your needs and interests change. Of course, you may want or need to follow a set curriculum or syllabus. For example, if you're preparing for a specific exam, such as a Cambridge English exam. However, there’s still plenty of scope for flexibility when you choose to learn online.

You set the learning pace!

There's nothing more frustrating or demotivating than being sat in a class and not understanding the topic. It’s all too common to think that you’re the only one who is struggling and to be afraid to ask the teacher to explain things again.

The problem with a face-to-face course is that you may end up having to go through some topics too quickly. What you need is plenty of time to make sure you understand everything properly. There's not much a teacher can do when faced with class time limits. But wait! Obstacles like these can be overcome with an online one-to-one teacher. You can work together to design a curriculum that works for you! What's more, if you find a topic hard and need more practice, then your online tutor can make sure you only move on to a new topic when you’re ready! No pressure!
