Last week’s social media topic was the difference between American
English and British English vocabulary. The focus was on the
names used for items of clothing. There are a number of clothing items that have different names in America and the UK. This is one area of vocabulary that
can cause confusion about which item of clothing is being discussed.
It all depends on whether the person is an American English speaker
or a British English speaker. If you have one of each, then the
conversation might be rather interesting.
Here
is a list of clothing items and their British English and American
English names.
You
can understand how people might become confused. Let’s consider
some scenarios. An American English speaker says, “I’m planning
to wear dark pants to my job interview.” A British person who heard
this statement might think the speaker’s decision to wear underwear
to a job interview was highly inappropriate.
Here
is another situation where misunderstanding is possible. A British
English speaker says, “It’s a cold day today. I should have worn
a vest.” When an American hears this, they might well think, that
wearing a vest wouldn’t keep a person warm in winter and that an
undershirt or a sweater would be a more practical item of clothing to
wear.
Learning
about these differences can make communication much easier and
conversations far less embarrassing.
