Should My Child Take the 11+ Exam?

The summer holidays are about to commence and many parents are thinking of secondary school options. One option for many people is the local grammar school. It can be very difficult to decide whether the local grammar school might be suitable for your child.

Every child is individual and the important thing is to match the child to the right school for them. If you think that your child might be best suited to the local grammar school then there are ways to increase their chance of gaining a much coveted place. Some schools do provide opportunities for pupils to take practice papers so they at least have some understanding of what the exam looks like. However, not all schools do this. Even if your child does try a practice exam, either at school or at home, they might understandably be very confused about the type of questions they are faced with. If you and your child are in that position then it is worthwhile considering getting a tutor in. The tutor can explain to your child each of the different techniques that might appear on the papers and give them definitive strategies to help them be more likely to answer them correctly. They will also have opportunities to work on the techniques they find particularly difficult.

Preparing your child for what they are going to encounter and making sure they know how to approach the questions can make all the difference on the exam day. If you have ever looked at an 11+ exam paper you will know that it is quite different to what your child learns in school so thorough preparation can ensure that your child goes into the exam with more confidence.
